A time for giving! – The Artbox

A weird and wearing year is about to come to an end. The coming holiday seasons will let us seek rest and recovery with our loved ones, our friends, and families! Even if this year it might be only with our nearest and dearest. We want to show our love and thankfulness and try to find the perfect gift, e.g. for a creative person in our life!

Whether they are a budding or accomplished artist, the gift of a private art class with me at the studio in Belair or online (on demand) will be for sure an inspiring gift under the tree or at any other special moment coming.

Creative experiences make wonderful gifts for friends and family members who crave inspiration no matter their experiences or backgrounds in art. Whether you want to make their artistic journey easier – or perhaps their practice simply more enjoyable – my beautiful art boxes could be the key to unlocking or even boosting their creativity.

The content of the box, decorated with one of my original mono-prints, includes a high quality block of paper, a mechanical pen with three different coloured mines (soft pencil, red & white chalk) as well as a personalised card detailing an inspirational exercise to start off with some practical fun right away, even before coming to a 1:1 session at the studio. The box also contains the voucher for the private art session with me (1.5 h), that will be individually appointed and includes all required materials.

2020 has made us all rethink what makes us happy so perhaps this gift will inspire your loved one to embark on an artistic journey he or she has been longing for, for years! Send a mail to sonja(at)sonjasoyer.com and acquire one of these beautiful boxes as long as they the last. The price is just 350€!

Creative Art Monster Lab – for the age group 12+ – end August/Sept.

In this fun and experimental art workshop for older children and teenagers we will discover a whole new level of creative play, explore drawing & painting processes and create new sculptures out of recycled soft toys.

During a whole week we will have the possibility to discuss different approaches to creative works, we will be drawing, planning and painting but the essential work during this week will be to use recycled soft toys to create a new kind of sculptures or assemblages, by taking them apart and reassembling them in a different form, creating new meaning and an overall new context and bringing very individual and exciting little art monsters of their own – kind to life!

The Classes are taking place in English, French and German at my studio in Belair27, rue Jean Bertholet from Monday 31st August to Friday 4th September every afternoon from 17.00 – 19.00. Despite the slightly more difficult situation regarding the Corona virus I am still able to offer small group classes of a maximum of 6 participants, following the given hygiene rules by the Luxembourgish government.

During this workshop the students are encouraged to experiment with different materials and express themselves on paper and three dimensionally. The great advantage of this week long workshop is that bigger art projects can be worked on in a continuous flow and the students will be encouraged & working at their individual pace. All sessions end with a group reflection phase in which the students will also learn to express themselves verbally about their creative processes and creations.

The course fee is 360 Euros for the set of 5 art classes and includes all materials. The fee is payable on subscription and I hope you do understand that refunds will not be available. Should there be a difficulty to continue the classes at the studio due to the pandemic, I will try to continue the classes as life streaming sessions. The participants should wear clothes that can get dirty or should bring an apron that protects their clothing.

From the studio of an artist during the Corona lockdown and after

At lunch time on March 12th 2020 I said good-bye to the last group of students at the studio after a 2h session and couldn’t foresee how significantly my work would change, at least for quite a foreseeable time. From one week to the next I had to set out all my classes and the realisation of how big the impact of the corona virus to our life’s really is, is still settling in.

Culture, art and creativity are some of the most important human inspirations that keep us going, during the toughest times, we could see that with the many videos of musicians, actors and artists that kept posting inspirational content to keep our spirits high. During the first three weeks of the confinement I tried to find ways to make sure I could continue my classes as they were, in the online world. Little did I know that preparing a kids class that I normally give in three languages, would demand a crippling amount of time to prepare in a written format. Not to even talk about my quest to find a safe platform and a working concept for an online art studio where I wanted nothing more than to go back to my routine of inspiring people to express themselves. Eight weeks later I am still working on the online concepts for classes and have finally found two interesting leads, that also technically seem to allow further classes, but more on that soon.

Since childhood, my escape to happiness and mental strength have always been making art and self expression. You may guess it, in order to come back to my happy core I started to spend more and more time at the studio, which luckily is just across the hall. I have been focusing on making gelli prints and collages and found moments in which I could forget it all and even experienced bliss. And essentially I found a thankfulness for the opportunity to concentrate probably for the first time since my university years, a big part of my working day on the creation of art again. And last but not least I found myself with a substantial collection of cool art pieces now for sale, that are all somehow an expression of this very specific moment in time. Have a look maybe there is something for you there too?!
Without truly running away or closing my eyes from the difficulties that the situation brings, the hours of making art have provided me with an inner balance that helped me to cope with the still existing challenges of the new life.

So in order to help you to find moments of mindful creation I am currently working on two life streaming classes that I hopefully will be able to publish soon, if in the mean time you would like to take one on one art coaching sessions either online or life at the studio (from 18th May onwards) under the given hygiene rules of wearing a mask and washing hands you are very welcome to contact me for appointments. Stay safe & I hope to be able to catch up with you soon,

Colour explosion – an expressive painting workshop

This fun and expressive painting workshop over six weeks is structured around the exploration of different colours & art materials, as gouaches, inks, acrylics, crayons etc. It is a class in which we will creatively explore the painting possibilities of the different materials, in order to identify individual preferences that will put the participants on a path to develop their own personal style. You will learn how to work with your inspirations and yet keep an open end process in order to avoid a painting by numbers effect.

The explorative way in which we will use the materials is great for beginners but also for experienced artists a like, as a new use of colours and materials can unblock those who have been stuck in rut for a while. The participants will be encouraged to trust themselves and their painting process and will learn to creatively react to challenges that might appear on their paths.

The workshops take place at my atelier in Belair on Wednesday evenings from 19.00 – 21.00  or on Thursday mornings from 10.00 – 12.00. The classes start on the 29th/30th April.

Due to holidays the class dates are: 29/30th April, 6/7th May, 13/14th May, 20/21th May, 10/11th June, 17/18th June. As the spaces are limited to 8 students, please do book early in order to avoid disappointment!

Inspire your creativity with all your senses – in the south of France

Come and join me for a summer in the south of France at the foot of the Pyrenees – blue skies and plane trees shadowing the streets, charming alleyways winding between old houses, and crickets chirping in the midday heat;  the  aroma of fresh “baguette” in the morning and a fragrant coffee on the terrace of a sports bar in the afternoon.

This could be your dream come true!

In the setting of the vibrant and exciting music festival in Chalabre, I will offer a 5 day art class program entitled:

Inspire your creativity with all your senses

For 5 days, from August 4th to 8th , we will meet  in either the bright morning light or the warm afternoon sun to paint the  endless inspiration bestowed upon us by this beautiful ancient town and its modern-day music festival. Each day we will work together for 3 hours at various locations and return for an evening hour of review. Daily downtime will provide you the opportunity to continue drawing and painting on your own and explore the rich festival program with musicians and artists from all over the world.  You may choose to wander in the spectacular surrounding landscape or enjoy a refreshing swim at lac de Montbel.

Please register as soon as possible, as this class is limited to a maximum of 10 participants.  The price, inclusive of all materials, is 500 Euro.

For accommodation, you will find ample and affordable offerings including the beautiful  Yobaba-Lounge  (images above) as well as other local hotels, bed & breakfast and Airbnb options in the region! Due to the popularity of the festival I recommend you book your accommodation early. And getting there is easy, from Luxembourg you can now get direct flights to Toulouse or from Brussels Charleroi to Carcassonne. Most accommodations offer a transport from and to the airport for an extra fee or you can rent a car at the airport and are able to explore the beautiful region. Montsegur, Carcassonne, the Niaux caves are all within driving range and are clearly beautiful locations not to be missed.

Chalabre en Sérénade

Chalabre is a charming little town over 800 years old nestled at the feet of the Pyrenees. It has a rich history with Romanesque roots and was, in mediaeval times, one of the cradles of troubadour singing. Despite the growth of a local weaving industry at the beginning of the last century, with the passing of time Chalabre  found itself drifting sleepily towards obscurity.

Chalabre was brought back to life with the inception of the music and art festival Chalabre en Sérénade created in 2017 by the well-known musician and artist Vinx De’Jon Parrette and his wife Jennifer as a summer festival and “startup” bootcamp for young music artists from all over the world. It soon became an annual highlight, reinvigorating a less favored municipality on the outskirts of modern life in big cities and the profitable tourist’s inrush of other regions. The festival has brought renewed energy and vitality to Chalabre, allowing a sleeping beauty to open her eyes once again.

Under the art-conduct of Vinx, professionals meet young talents in masterclasses, develop their ideas and present them in front of the audience of Chalabre’s citizens and summer guests. Throughout the run of the festival, musicians perform their work on stages in the streets, in the main market-square, and in the small village theatre. The week is culminated by a promenade with singing from the juliet balconies of the town’s houses, marrying perfectly with Chalabre’s rich  troubadour history.

Experience the exciting atmosphere of this unique, outstanding cultural event and allow your senses to be inspired in the most manifold of ways, to boost your creativity during my Summer art class.

Salut et á bientôt á Chalabre,

Sonja x
